SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Inclusive websites
Whenever I build a website I ensure that people with different disabilities can use it (e.g. those who use assistive technologies). This is necessary to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.
Ease of use on the web
I sometimes get frustrated using the web. This stems from a design-based lack of understanding of how human beings use websites. I think we have come to accept certain usability flaws in websites which we simply shouldn't have to deal with. I strive to design sites which are clear and understandable from the moment you arrive.
Form design
Form design is a little understood area of the web. Many sites exclude groups of users from using their forms through easily rectifiable mistakes. I make sure any forms I build are self-explanatory and well-laid out.
Consultancy
As part of my web design work, I provide clients with consultancy on how to make their websites accessible to disabled users and the best ways to ensure future visits (hits). I spend time within each project to make sure my client's understand the issues involved with updating their websites.
Writing
I am a expert writer/editor for the web, and longer form printed copy, and have advised and trained clients in writing successful content. I am a skilled communicator via email (and happy to talk on the phone or face to face!) and have written training manuals and content guides for websites.
Teaching and training
After completing an MSc in Interactive Multimedia Production (1999), I freelanced while teaching web design in various guises at undergraduate level (conceptual stuff & instructional teaching in Flash and Director) at The Hull School of Art and Design. Since teaching, I have helped clients maintain their websites by providing training and advice. I am familiar with OpenCMS and Adobe Contribute.
Contract work
In addition to the websites and print design you see here, I have worked on projects for local new media companies such as:
- The Workshop - Flash quizzes.
- Futurate - website designs/builds for a range of clients including XHTML/CSS for Their Reading Futures.
- Dig for Fire - email marketing for national catalogues.
I understand that the ethos of each company is different and work closely with my contract clients to ensure their needs are met.
